Do you believe that you can build the life you’re dreaming of? Do you believe that you can achieve work-life balance, and create a plan to seek out and develop the life of your dreams? You can, and it begins with attention in six focal areas of your life. YOU are in the driver’s seat. YOU control your destiny. It is such a simple truth, yet so hard to believe. Try to believe it.
Step 1: Dream a Dream
Start by looking at each of these 6 areas and dream goals for each one.
- Relationships & Friendships
- Home and Family
- Hobbies, Passions & Interests
- Healthy Eating and Fitness
- Work/Career or Life Calling (this could be volunteering or raising children)
Design DREAMS, WANTS, and ACTION ITEMS for each area.
Dreaming about relationships – what do you want this area of your life to look like? What would your relationships be if they were just the way you wanted them to be? Write down your thoughts and create some action items that match to fulfilling those goals. Potentially your action items could be: a monthly date night with your husband, a monthly girls night, one on one time with your kids, etc.
Fitness & Health
If this area of your life could be a dream, what would it look like? Think about the body and health of your dreams. Write down what it would look like. Think of goals that match to your dreams. Potential action items could be: heart smart healthy eating, begin exercising 4 times a month for 3 months in a row, sign up for a yoga class, go to the batting cages, etc. You can start small, just start somewhere.
Spiritual & Mental
We often leave this behind, but it is a vital area of our life. What does your spiritual life and mental well being look like in your dreams? Think about the goals that match to that. Write down action items. Potential action items could be: Attending a church service regularly, daily devotions, mission trips, meditation, prayer, etc.
Hobbies, Passions & Interests
What are your hobbies, passions and interests? If you have none, what would they be if you were living the life of your dreams? Write down your goals and visions. Create potential action items that fulfill those dreams. Think for a moment, why aren’t you finding any time in your schedule for your passions?
What does your work life look like in your dreams? Do you love your job? If not, what do you like about it? What do you hate about it? What does the job you’d enjoy look like? Document what you are thinking. Create action items. Ideas could be: If you dislike your job, set dates and a plan to look for a new one. Begin asking for assignments or projects in areas that you enjoy doing. Volunteer at an agency where you can volunteer for tasks that you love to do. If you don’t have a job, set regular goals to search out and find the job of your dreams. Use your network. Ask questions. Believe that your end goal is not only within sight, but completely attainable.
What does your home life look like in your dreams? Do you have a picture in mind? Write it down. Dream away. Create a plan that gets you there.
Step 2: Create Action Items
Create the action items that equal the goals that you’d like to accomplish in the next year. Plot those actions on a calendar. ‘Schedule’ yourself and don’t let yourself down. Follow through on your scheduled appointments. Challenge yourself to keep the commitments that you make to yourself.
Step 3: Accept and Do
Accept that you do create your destiny. You create the direction and the path. YOU are the driver. You are in control. Preparing a plan will get you where you want to go.
