There are ups and downs in everything, from careers to economies. All this oscillating action got me thinking that waves might be a nice metaphor for career issues.
Turns out, it’s not so simple. For one thing, there are all kinds of waves – sound waves, optic waves, seismic waves and what I would call wave waves, which are found in water.
It’s also not easy to define waves, at least scientifically. Wikipedia says a wave “is a disturbance that propagates through space and time, usually with transference of energy.” If you want to make a wave work for you, you need to find ways to capture its energy. Surfers do this by riding a wave through the water. In fact, there’s enough energy in oceans that serious consideration is currently given to harnessing ocean currents as an alternative energy source.
It seems to me that knowing which way a wave is going and positioning ourselves appropriately are essential steps to advancing our careers, but how many of us take the time to do this or are strategic about it?
