It takes a lot for a website to break onto the social networking scene and there is a new one on the horizon that is focused on doing just that. About.me bills itself as a “custom profile & personal analytics dashboard”. While it’s not open to the public just yet, you can reserve your personalized URL and wait for an invitation to set up a profile.
The concept behind about.me is to have a centralized location in which to direct people that links to all of your other profiles, websites and blogs on the web. That means no more separate LinkedIn, Twitter, website or blog URLs to direct people to. Simply give them your about.me URL and that will bring them to your profile with everything right there.
The two main functions right now are your profile and your dashboard. Your profile can be edited to include customized fonts, images, backgrounds, colors and links. I would think as the site develops and expands that there will be more profile features available. Your dashboard gives you feedback on your profile’s total views, clicks and links along with a breakdown by date and hour, time spent on your profile and new visitors.
As far as I can tell right now, if you view your own profile or click any of the links that counts towards your statistics. I haven’t done anything to promote my profile yet so when I checked my statistics I was surprised to see that on one particular day I had a spike in visitors to my profile. Then I realized that was the day I created my profile and had been going in and out to view it and clicking on links to make sure they worked. Since this site is just starting out I would imagine that they will smooth out the bumps as they go along.
About.me does have a great forum where you can offer site suggestions, post comments and read answers. It seems that they have a genuine interest in listening to their users and want to improve the site based on the feedback they receive. After all, happy users are great promotional tools.
I think that the idea behind this site is great and that time will tell if it can get a foot in the door of a saturated social networking web. I invite you to check out my profile: about.me/megankoehler. It’s pretty basic right now but hopefully as the site improves I can improve my profile as well. While you’re at it, go ahead and reserve your own personalized URL, that way if this site takes off you’ll be one step ahead of the crowd.
