There seems to be an opinion floating around that a job seeker targeting an executive level position should call on the expertise of a professional resume writer for their resume. Well, I can tell you, as a professional resume writer, I have seen my fair share of executive level job candidates. Can I tell you that the reason they are hiring me is because they are an executive? Yes and no.
I can tell you that the executives I work with have used my services because they have extremely demanding and busy schedules and find it easier to hire me to put in the time to create their resume. Some executives simply have the means to hire a professional resume writer because they are in a position that pays a higher salary. And some executives are so used to delegating that it is second nature to have someone else do the work for them.
This doesn’t mean that an executive is not capable of writing their own resume; they are as capable as anyone else. Would I recommend that someone pursuing a C-level position always use a professional resume writer? No more than I would recommend it to any other job seeker. Not everyone is able to capture their career history in a way that can market their strengths and position themselves as the ideal candidate and that is when a professional resume writer is an investment to consider. For example, if I wanted to I could do my own taxes; however I find it an overwhelming and draining chore which is why I hire a professional to do my taxes. It is well worth the money spent to have it done and have it done right.
It is true that a professional resume writer is up to date on the latest trends in resume standards, knows what hiring managers and ATS are looking for, and can implement the strategies that will have the most impact on a candidate’s job search. Regardless of the position you are targeting all job seekers could benefit from the services of a professional resume writer. A professional resume writer has no personal attachment to your career history so they are able to take an objective look at your resume and determine what should stay and what should go. However, hiring a professional resume writer is a personal choice with many factors to consider.
A well written resume – either written by you or someone else will always stand out over a poorly written resume. If you have the time and talent to create your own resume then do it; doesn’t matter what type of position. If not and you have the means to hire someone to write your resume then go for it.
If you do choose to hire a professional resume writer do your homework. Research writers, view samples of their work, talk to the writer you will be working with, and understand the process before you begin.
