Apex posted an interesting situation on their blog. The man’s wife cornered his boss and complained to the boss about how her husband had to work long hours while receiving minimal pay. What should he do?
First of all, when you invite your spouse to your company’s Christmas party, you have to discuss with him or her about what you hope will happen, so that you can avoid these types of surprises. A Christmas party is a chance to mingle with colleagues and have a good time, reflecting back on the year about to end. The Christmas party is not the place to stir trouble.
That being said, now that trouble has come to you, what should you do? The first thing is not to panic. The next work day, assess the situation. I would say to go see your boss and clear the air. There is always some truth to what is being said, so don’t deny it. Instead, try to explain it or give some context to it. In the above scenario, you can say that you understand that we are in a difficult economy and that the company has to make difficult choices. The reason why your wife complained to your boss is that you are going through a difficult time. Don’t over expose yourself. Keep it short and to the point. More importantly, don’t make it a bigger deal than it is.
