Our society would like us to believe that we’re defined by our careers and the contributions we can make through our work. Everything else we do is just slacking off, taking from society.
Society is defined by how we interact as a group, and how we progress toward the ideals that we hold. For instance, we in the US hold dear the concepts of freedom, equal opportunity, and fairness. We will never achieve the ideal, but that doesn’t reduce the importance of working toward it.
In your work, you might be helping to advance your country toward its vision. Or not. More likely, your work gives you the ability to make some money so that you can make advances in your personal, family, spiritual, and work life. So as we move into 2011, take a little time to think about what REAL goals you have for yourself, your family, your friends, and society at large. What role do you want to play, and what kinds of contributions do you want to make? What do you want to be remembered for?
THEN look at how your work can help you to reach those goals. If that means you’ll need to change jobs or switch careers, no problem. It’s time to get started.
