You’re angry. You did not get that promotion (again)! You deserved it. You don’t understand what happened and your attitude is less than stellar.
What could have happened?
Your Brand and Image
It is possible that your brand and image at the office has suffered from others’ lack of knowledge of your achievements, a lack of knowledge of your capabilities, or they could be unable to picture you outside of the role that you now hold.
Someone else may have presented with better qualifications, or they were simply more convincing that they could do a better job in the role. They could have had years of proven experience or have presented better under pressure.
So, what do you do now? You hold your head up high and move forward with a good attitude. Just because you didn’t get this promotion doesn’t mean that you won’t get the next one. What could hold you back next time is a poor attitude and poor sportsmanship this time. Success is a long path, wrought with many failures on the way to the next promotion. It is unlikely that you will scale the path upwards without a few rejections. Learn to take the rejections well. Some of my best promotions came the 2nd time around (after the first person hired didn’t work out). Help the new person out any way that you can. Become their right hand. Learn from them. You will achieve great things if you have set your mind to do so.
If you find that you cannot achieve that promotion at the company that you are at currently, nothing is holding you back from applying at other companies. Determination and a good attitude will get you where you want to go.
